Happy New Year To You, Our MTV Movies Blog Readers
by on Dec.31, 2009, under MTV Movies Blog
Good afternoon, everyone. Before the Aughts come to a close at midnight tonight, I just want to take a moment to thank you readers for your support and your interest in MTV Movies Blog this year. I started the job at the beginning of May, a few short weeks before the whirlwind of action that was the 2009 MTV Movie Awards. It was a trial by fire; the turnout for our live blog left me pretty sure I’d passed, but I definitely singed a few whiskers along the way.
Really, I just want to take this moment before the year ends to thank you readers for your participation in the ongoing dialogue here on MTV Movies Blog. It’s been enlightening, learning from you all. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to call myself a “Twilight” fan, but it’s fascinating aspect of our pop culture and — as a multi-faceted fanboy myself — I have boundless respect for the ever-growing legion of fans who have turned it into a phenomenon.
2010 is going to be all about establishing stronger voices here on MTV Movies Blog. There are some exceptionally talented writers and reporters contributing content already and several more to come. In addition to maintaining the same high standard of news reporting and commentary here on the blog, my hope is that we’ll see some new regular features emerge, platforms like Twitter-Wood that allow one writer or another to own his or her work. We’re nowhere without your feedback though, so please keep the discussion going in the comments sections, on Twitter and with us directly at tips@mtvmoviesblog.com.
Thanks again to you all for your continued support. See you in 2010!
Looking Back On 2009 With The MTV Movies Team
by on Dec.31, 2009, under MTV Movies Blog
And so we reach the end of 2009. It’s been quite a year for movies, hasn’t it? Records were broken, vampires continued to sparkle and the game was presumably changed. James Cameron showed the world that he still knows how to tell a tale. Neill Blomkamp and Oren Peli both proved that there are still fresh, original ways of presenting familiar fare. And folks like Joel and Ethan Coen, Jason Reitman, Quentin Tarantino, J.J. Abrams, Spike Jonze and the entire Pixar team continued to define themselves as some of our favorite storytellers.
Here on the MTV Movies team, everyone has a different idea about what made 2009 a fantastic one for film. I’m here to share some of those highlight moments and favorite movies with you now. The entire team isn’t represented here — busy end-of-year schedules and all that jazz — but you get a good sampling of what moved us and why. Happy New Year, y’all! See you in 2010!
Josh Horowitz, MTV Movies Managing Editor on his favorite movie of the year… (originally posted as part of Josh’s Top 10 of 2009 list)
It’s admittedly easy to fall into hyperbolic exclamations when discussing (maybe) the biggest movie ever made but here we go…
“Avatar” is why we go to the movies. Or to make it more personal, “Avatar” is why I fell in love with the movies. It inspires awe and emotion by equal measure and that’s a mean feat when the former has the most sophisticated effects ever created behind it. Anchored by soulful performances (Worthington and Saldana impress more with each viewing) that somehow transcend the spectacle, “Avatar” takes its rightful place alongside the great wondrous epics that stand for what the medium can be at its best. I’ve seen “Avatar” three times and it makes me feel like a kid again every time. I look forward to taking the trip again.
Brian Jacks, Senior Producer on his favorite releases of the year…
“Adventureland“
A hip, modern romantic comedy with superbly convincing performances from Jessie Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart, and a wonderfully understated ensemble cast.
“Taken“
One of the best action films of the past decade, placing Liam Neeson’s vengeful father on the same pedestal as James Bond and Jason Bourne.
“Duplicity“
A cute spy yarn showcasing the picture-perfect chemistry between Julia Roberts and Clive Owen.
“District 9“
Any film that grosses over $100 million on a budget of under $20,000 deserves respect, but luckily in this case it was also one of the smartest, most original sci-fi movies in recent memory.
“Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans“
An absolute joy to see a battle-hardened Nicolas Cage basking his most surreal film since “Leaving Las Vegas.”
“Avatar“
A defining gamechanger for the industry, Avatar builds on its lavish special effects with an emotional connecting storyline and characters you can root for.
Kyle Anderson, MTV Newsroom Editor on his favorite movie of the year…
Definitely “Taken.” I saw the “I will find you and I will kill you” ads on TV and thought, “That looks delightfully nutty,” but couldn’t dream of the awesomeness contained within. For those who don’t know, “Taken” is the story of Liam Neeson and how he likes to go to Paris to shoot people in the face (the movie is even more awesome than that description). Who knew that Neeson was such a great action hero?
Rachel Josue, Digital Producer on… well… see for yourself:
Best WTF (yet awesome!) Stint On A Soap: James Franco
Josh Wigler, Contributing Editor on two standouts in 2009…
Best Performance: Sam Rockwell, “Moon” (*spoilers ahead*)
Not only is Sam Rockwell’s turn as lonely moon-dwelling spaceman Sam Bell in Duncan Jones’ “Moon” the actor’s finest performance to date, it’s also the single best performance of the year. The fact that Rockwell — and “Moon” at large — was entirely skipped over by the Golden Globes is still frustrating to me, but it doesn’t take away from the actor’s fantastic portrayal(s) of a man (men) on the edge of his (their) wits. (*end spoilers*)
Best Theatrical Experience of the Year: “Drag Me To Hell”
As an avid fan of James Cameron’s, I fully expected “Avatar” to be my favorite moviegoing experience of the year. It certainly ranks high on the list, but the top honor ultimately goes to director Sam Raimi’s epic return to the horror genre in “Drag Me To Hell.” Is it the best movie of the year? No, probably not, but it’s certainly the most entertaining trip to the theaters I had all year. If you missed this in cinemas, make sure you see it with the best surround sound system you can possibly get your hands on — the gags in this movie are all about the sound, provoking one of the most simultaneously disgusting, hilarious and riveting viewing experiences of 2009.
Adam Rosenberg, MTV Movies Blog Editor on his favorite in-theater experience of the year…
I saw lots of great stuff this year and had a kickass time taking it all in at theaters, but nothing for me compares to the experience of seeing “Black Dynamite” at Sundance in January. It was a midnight screening, the capper on a two-day span during which I took in 10 movies, five per day. We got to the theater 10-15 minutes late, but it didn’t matter; a packed house kept the movie from starting in anything approaching a timely fashion. It also created a magnificent sort of energy in the room, one of those situations where everyone is responding to the movie in tandem with one another.
“Black Dynamite” is a riotous good time, and one of my favorite flicks of the year. This enthusiasm comes in part from that night’s screening, two hours of non-stop laughter and hooting. It also comes in part from the movie’s climactic showdown. Spoilers lie ahead, so beware. But any movie that pits our hero against President Richard Nixon in a nunchaku fight wins, simple as that.
David Tennant On His ‘Doctor Who’ Mementoes… And When He’ll Be Back For A Cameo!
by on Dec.31, 2009, under MTV Movies Blog
While much of the world is busy bidding farewell to 2009, “Doctor Who” fans will be saying a different type of goodbye on January 1 when series star David Tennant concludes his celebrated run on the long-running BBC science-fiction series. One of the most popular actors to ever play the iconic role, Tennant has been the face of “Doctor Who” since 2005 and led the series to its most successful run (both in the UK and abroad) in its 47-year history.
As MTV’s resident “Doctor Who” geek, I sat down with Tennant for a chat about the looming end to his run as the time- and space-traveling adventurer known as The Doctor. Along with discussing what he’ll miss most about the role, he also revealed the mementoes he’s taking with him from his time as The Doctor — and when he might return for a cameo appearance like so many past Doctors.
“I was presented with a sonic screwdriver in a beautiful box that the prop department made for me,” said Tennant of his going-away gift. “So I got to take that home and that will sit in a very proud place in my home.”
“And I do have The Doctor’s suit now, hanging up in my wardrobe — the brown and the blue,” he added. “I haven’t tried it on yet, but I’m sure there will come a day when I’ll be dancing around at midnight, frightening the neighbors.”
As for making a cameo, Tennant stressed that he’ll need to put some time between his departure and any cameo he might make.
“Who knows? There’s no immediate plans,” he said. “I’d probably have to move away and let the dust settle and let the new team get established and all that. But there is a bit of a tradition of The Doctor meeting his former selves.”
“It happened with me when Peter Davison, who I watched when I was growing up, suddenly came back and did a scene with us, which was a real thrill for me,” he laughed. “[It was] very disorienting, to be faced with this guy who you watched as a kid in the gear — and there he was, in my TARDIS now. It was very odd.”
“It’s been a very odd experience really, playing this part all around,” he continued. “There’s been many very unusual moments, very disorienting moments, but it’s been a wonderful time. I wouldn’t have changed it for the world.”
Part Two of the “Doctor Who” season finale, “The End of Time,” airs January 1 on the BBC and BBC America.

Zelda Rubinstein, The Underwear Bomb And James Cameron In Today’s Twitter-Wood
by on Dec.31, 2009, under MTV Movies Blog
News that “Poltergeist” actress Zelda Rubinstein has been taken off of life support didn’t go unnoticed by horror movie fans in the Twitter-Wood community this week. The sad revelation caught the attention of both Richard Kelly and Jeff Katz (on his birthday, nonetheless), and I definitely echo those sentiments to her family.
In other posts, attempted underwear bomb from last week is still a trending topic among tweeters. Kevin Nealon was among those contemplating the ongoing investigation yesterday. Catch those thoughts after the jump along with Brian Lynch on Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner, Christina Applegate and Emmy Rossum on James Cameron’s work in “Avatar” and more in the Twitter-Wood report for December 30, 2009.
Twitter Pic of the Day:

@kevin_nealon Just what kind of residue are they analyzing in the would-be bomber’s underwear?
-Kevin Nealon, Actor (”Anger Management,” “Weeds”)
@1capplegate James Cameron’s plot to make the world look ridiculous! Lame! Stupid! Yet oddly attractive?…..not so much http://tweetphoto.com/7574652

@emmyrossum Now I understand why Cameron spent so many years making documentaries in 3D and developing the cameras and technology to create Avatar.
-Emmy Rossum, Actress (”Dare,” “Dragonball Evolution”)
@BrianLynch Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner broke up. Possible rebounds: Roger Taylor from DURAN DURAN, a taylor ham, or an actual tailor.
-Brian Lynch, Writer/Director (”Puss in Boots,” “Big Helium Dog”)
@ralphmacchio NINE, beautiful film but I favor ALL THAT JAZZ re: the impact it had on me in “film director demons” genre. CHICAGO more complete film too.

Drake Calls ‘Light Up,’ His Collabo With Jay-Z, ‘Phenomenal’

It’s done. Drake’s collaboration with Jay-Z, “Light Up,” is finally finished. The Toronto lyricist had been hopeful all year that he and Hov could connect in the studio.
“Everybody is looking for this one joint with me and Jay, so that needs to happen,” Drake told MTV News back in June. “My goal at this point is to keep making that organic music. I don’t wanna feel pressure now that I have a single and music that’s hot.”
Drake recently sat down with MTV News in his Canadian hometown and explained how the song, produced by Tone Mason and co-produced by his October’s Very Own cohort Noah “40″ Shebib, came to fruition.
The track will be included on the rapper’s forthcoming debut, Thank Me Later, tentatively slated for a March release.
“When I heard that beat, the drums that they had come up with, it was like, ‘Man, this is a moment,’ ” he said. ” ‘This sounds like where I’m at in my life.’ So, we took it and 40 did what he does to pieces of music that I see potential in — he took it to the next spot. Jay-Z’s on it. The song is phenomenal. It’s done now.”
The pair previously worked together on Jay-Z’s “Off That,” from Hov’s The Blueprint 3 project.
The Timbaland-produced track, however, only featured Drake on the hook instead of contributing a verse alongside Jay. This time, the two MCs both had their say on “Light Up.” Though the upstart MC was able to recruit the Roc Nation head into the fold for his first album, in addition to expected collabos with Lil Wayne and Kanye West, Drake said he’s trying to downplay the guest list and focus on his humble beginnings.
“At the end of the day, one of the biggest things I’ve been toying with on Thank Me Later is that it’s kind of hard for me to come out and be like, ‘I’m still the underdog,’ ” Drake told Mixtape Daily recently.
“I can’t rap about the same things [as I did] on So Far Gone, so it’s just really trying to tell the greatest story that’s never been told, which is the story of a rapper’s come-up, and tell it without being corny or over-bragging or sounding like, ‘Feel sorry for me.’ It’s going to be a very interesting record because I’m really going to have to dig deep and tell stories that people can relate to. But it’s kind of hard, because my life is at a very different place now. ”

Since his death on June 25, 2009, late pop icon Michael Jackson has been showered with accolades and honors for his 40-plus-year musical career. But on Wednesday (December 30), one of Jackson’s most enduring legacies, the pioneering 1983 dancing-ghoul-filled video for “Thriller,” was inducted into the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.
The Associated Press reported that the 14-minute mini-movie that revolutionized music videos and cemented Jackson’s status as one of the most ambitious, innovative pop stars of all time, was one of 25 films that were inducted into the world’s largest archive of film, TV and sound recordings.
The iconic video, directed by John Landis (”Animal House,” “The Blues Brothers”), is the first music video named to the registry. It earned its spot because of the landmark nature of its achievements, which include Guinness World Record sales of over 9 million copies.
“Because of the way the recording industry is evolving and changing, we thought it would be good to go back to the development of an earlier seismic shift, which was the development of the music video,” said Steve Leggett, coordinator of the National Film Preservation Board. “Thriller” had been considered for inclusion in the past, but Leggett said following Jackson’s death, the time seemed right to add the video to the list.
The library works with film archives, movie studios and record labels to ensure that original copies of the works it enshrines for their enduring cultural, historical and aesthetic importance to U.S. culture are kept safe as well as acquiring copies for its own vault.
Among the other works entering the National Film Registry this year: 1979’s “The Muppet Movie”; the 1957 sci-fi classic “The Incredible Shrinking Man”; Sergio Leone’s epic spaghetti western “Once Upon a Time in the West”; 1938’s “Jezebel,” featuring Bette Davis’ Oscar-winning performance; the 1975 bank-heist-gone-wrong movie “Dog Day Afternoon,” starring Al Pacino; 1940’s “The Mark of Zorro”; and the iconic “Little Nemo” from 1911, which mixed live action and animation and served as an inspiration for future animators, including Walt Disney.

Rihanna And Lady Gaga Top Our List Of 2009’s Most Stylish Stars

Jonas Brothers and Taylor Lautner rep for the guys in our fashion countdown.

It seems that 2009 was the year that it was cool to be out-there when it came to style. Whether it was Taylor Swift’s classic fashion sense or Rihanna and Lady Gaga’s cool, avant-garde aesthetic, style this year wasn’t about what people wanted you to be, but how you wanted people to see you.
Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift definitely sparkled this year, and we don’t mean just career-wise. On top of owning the charts, headlining a successful tour, winning every possible award (including the one that sparked that infamous VMA moment) and hosting “Saturday Night Live,” the singer looked impeccable at every event she attended and red carpet she walked thanks to her love of sequins.
Stand-out moments included the VMAs red carpet, the CMA Awards red carpet and the 44th annual Academy of Country Music Awards red carpet.
The Jonas Brothers
The Jonas Brothers are three guys who know that skinny suits, plaid and a brand-new haircut will always get the girls screaming. Whether they were traveling the world for their tour, catching lunch with a girl or hitting up a red carpet, the guys’ hip, downtown style remained young and fresh.
Stand-out moments included the EMAs red carpet, onstage during their shows and the premiere of “Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience.”
Rihanna
Rihanna certainly made a few fashion statements this year. Her ability to mix both edgy and glamorous styles makes this “Hard” singer one of the coolest fashionistas on the planet.
Stand-out moments included the Met Gala, the Chanel fashion show in Paris and the U.K. premiere of “Inglourious Basterds.”
Taylor Lautner
Taylor Lautner always manages to look hot and stylish. He loves a well-tailored suit and, even at the tender age of 17, has a decidedly old-Hollywood glamour about the way he presents himself. He’s well-groomed, and with that big smile and well-maintained physique, Lautner can light up any red carpet.
Stand-out moments included a “New Moon” screening in New York, the VMAs red carpet and the MTV Movie Awards red carpet.
Lady Gaga
However, this list wouldn’t be complete without the one lady who changed the look and feel of celebrity style — that woman is Lady Gaga. At times she looked wacky, at times her outfits were off-the-wall, but she was incredibly confident in any piece of couture she was wearing.
Stand-out moments included the VMAs red carpet (including date Kermit the Frog), the Queen’s Royal Variety Performance event and Billboard’s fourth annual Women In Music event.

It’s fitting that MTV’s Woman of the Year is going to cap off a tremendous 2009 by playing one of the most anticipated New Year’s Eve shows in the country. Lady Gaga’s December 31 show at the James L. Knight Center in Miami Beach is currently the hottest New Year’s Eve ticket on the market, according to “Extra,” despite ticket prices that range from $425 to $25,000. The show has already sold a reported $1 million in tickets.
But Gaga isn’t the only star ringing in the new year from the stage. She joins a cavalcade of bold names who will hoist some bubbly on Thursday, including Mariah Carey, Adam Lambert, John Mayer, reunited jam band Phish, Maroon 5 and psychedelic astronauts the Flaming Lips.
Lambert, MTV’s #3 Man of the Year, will take the stage at the annual Gridlock New Year’s Eve concert in his native Los Angeles on the Paramount Pictures Studio backlot. Though there are far fewer big-name shows than usual for the last night of the year, New York will have the typical mother lode of options for revelers, including Carey at Madison Square Garden, a DJ set from Passion Pit at Piano’s, Q-Tip at the Brooklyn Bowl, Patti Smith at the Bowery Ballroom, some jam rock from the Disco Biscuits at Nokia Theatre, who knows what from Hole frontwoman Courtney Love at the Standard Hotel’s Boom Boom Room, and guaranteed techno mayhem at Webster Hall with MSTRKRFT.
Phish will also be in Miami, winding up a four-night stand at American Airlines Arena with a NYE blowout, as will 1980s new wavers the B-52’s, who will rock in the new year at Hard Rock Live. Joining Lambert in Los Angeles for revelry will be techno funkers Chromeo with DJ Peanut Butter Wolf at Club Nokia, R&B queen Erykah Badu at the House of Blues, and hip-hop legend DJ Quik with Bone Thugs-N-Harmony member Bizzy Bone at the Key Club.
Up the coast in San Francisco, the surviving members of the Grateful Dead will perform as Furthur at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, Jimmy Fallon house band and hip-hop powerhouse the Roots will plug in at the Warfield, and Ozomatli, Bassnectar, and Ghostland Observatory will bring the dance funk at the Concourse Exhibition Center.
Chicago’s roster of shows is a mixed bag of blues, jam and electro rock with the Black Keys at the Riviera, mixmaster Girl Talk at the Congress Theater, Umphrey’s McGee at the Aragon Ballroom, and Crystal Castles at Logan Square.
Socially conscious rapper Mos Def will perform at the Trocadero in Philadelphia, while Spoon will hook up with unpredictable punk Jay Reatard at the Riverside in Milwaukee, and jammers Galactic are at legendary Tipitinas in New Orleans. In Washington, D.C., soul singer Anthony Hamilton will be at Zanzibar, and Third Eye Blind will play the Grand Hyatt. The Goo Goo Dolls will suit up at the Sound Board in Detroit.
Denver will live up to its happy hippy vibe with shows by Sound Tribe Sector Nine at the Wells Fargo Theatre and the Yonder Mountain String Band at the Fillmore. Flo Rida will flex his muscle at the IP Casino Resort & Spa in Biloxi, Mississippi. In Las Vegas, the John Mayer Trio will share a stage with buzz singer Meyer Hawthorne at the Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, and Maroon 5 will be joined by actor/songwriter Jason Segel at the Pearl Concert Theatre at the Palms. Band of Horses will rock in the year at the Tabernacle in Atlanta, while the Flaming Lips will unleash their typical end-of-year mayhem with a show in their hometown of Oklahoma City. For the gig, the psychedelic survivors will perform Pink Floyd’s trippy masterpiece Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety in addition to a set of their own music at the Cox Convention Center.
What are you doing on New Year’s Eve?
