Earlier this month, Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.I.Am told MTV News the collective’s The E.N.D. world tour would deliver “things flying and the stage transforming.” Well, the Grammy-winning group’s show came through New York’s Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night (February 24), and the futuristic performance lived up to the hype.
From the onset, when the four-person crew entered via platforms underneath the stage, to midway through the set when Will.I.Am freestyled rhymes based on text messages, the Peas put on a concert that was every bit as energetic as their pulsing tracks.
As the booming bass of “Let’s Get It Started” drummed up, Apl.de.Ap was the first BEP member to pop up onstage. He was soon followed by Taboo and Fergie. A billowing cloud of smoke enshrouded the stage as Will.I.Am joined his mates, complete with a “Phantom of the Opera”-like mask.
“Let’s get it started,” Fergie sang, as lights radiated from the stage into the crowd. “Let’s get it started in here.”
The onetime Eazy-E protégés (before Fergie joined the group) returned to their original lyrical pedigree halfway through their performance. Will urged fans to send text messages, and the words later appeared on gigantic screens in the arena. The producer then freestyled and incorporated the messages into his boasts.
Fergie took a brief moment during the Peas’ set to detour into a mini solo set of her own. She strutted down the runway that extended into the audience in blinged-out boots and an impossibly short metallic minidress. But Fergie was a part of the BEP family on this night and quickly returned to the set; the guys rejoined her onstage as they performed an encore to “I Gotta Feeling.”
Just before the group performed, David Guetta stirred things up as a surprise guest. The DJ announced to the crowd that he arrived from Paris to make it to the concert. He cued up his Kelly Rowland-assisted song “When Love Takes Over” and walked off, still on his turntables, as a crew collected his equipment and pulled Guetta offstage while the music was still playing.
Ludacris and LMFAO helped kick things off prior to that. The rowdy “I’m in Miami, Trick” party rockers did a brief set, including their hit “Shots.”
Ludacris pulled out a number of hits throughout his set, from “Move” to “Stand Up.” The Atlanta MC was sporting black jeans, sneakers, a leather jacket and a thermal shirt, but Ludacris’ mood didn’t match his dark outfit; he was easygoing and jovial throughout.
“I think this side over here is the livest one tonight,” Luda said.
Island Def Jam boss L.A. Reid, Universal/Motown chief Sylvia Rhone and former Warner Music Group executive Kevin Liles were among those in attendance to see ‘Cris. The “Sexting” star then closed things out with his breakout hit “What’s Your Fantasy.”

iTunes hits 10 billion sold

Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry helped drive sales of tracks on Apple’s iTunes store past the 10 billion mark Wednesday (February 24). And the person who bought the 10 billionth track gets a $10,000 iTunes gift card.
The Black Eye Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling” is the most-downloaded song on the store, with “Boom Boom Pow” landing at #3. Lady Gaga is the artist with the most songs toward the top, with “Poker Face” at #2, “Just Dance” at #6 and “Bad Romance” at #22. Other acts with tracks in the top 25 include Coldplay, Kanye West, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Kings of Leon, the Fray and Owl City.
All of the top 25 tracks were released in the past five years (Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok” is the newest at #10) except for one: “Don’t Stop Believin’.” Classic rockers Journey undoubtedly have “The Sopranos” and “Glee” to thank for renewed interest in the unstoppable song, first recorded in 1981, which landed at #21.
In 2006, Apple gave a gift card, 20-inch iMac, 10 60GB iPods and a music-school scholarship set up in the winner’s name to the person who purchased the 1 billionth download. Apple’s iTunes store was known as the iTunes Music Store when it launched less than seven years ago, prior to the addition of videos, movies and TV shows.
Onetime MTV News correspondent Iann Robinson helped introduce iTunes in an infomercial that ran in Apple stores and online back in the day. In it, Robinson explained what are now well-known concepts like single-track downloads, full-album purchases, free 30-second previews of songs, burning CDs and transferring to iPods.
“These are the people that changed my life with the simple invention of the iPod,” he said in the six-minute-plus video. “Buy a song or a whole album. Either way, you get album art! Awesome!”

LMFAO’s Sky Blu, Redfoo Talk Work And Play On The Road

When not battling Mitt Romney, the Party Rock duo try to keep up with the Black Eyed Peas.

LMFAO’s Sky Blu came off more like a party crasher than a party rocker earlier this week, when he and former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney got into an alleged scuffle in an airplane before it took off for Los Angeles from Vancouver.
But he and partner Redfoo are usually more festive fellas.
The production duo and “I’m in Miami Trick” performers are currently on tour opening for the Black Eyes Peas, along with Ludacris after recently wrapping up their own headlining trek.
Sly Blu called the Peas kindred spirits when it comes to partying.
“They’re party animals like us,” he told MTV News. “First, you got the show, then we got the afterparty. And any given night there’s three afterparties. [Will.I.Am] got one … and us, so sometimes we hit them all. And then after that, [the Peas] got something else. They got the Boom Boom Room. Not like their song, it’s the boom, boom, let’s do it, where they always DJ at their hotels.”
The duo are signed to Will.I.Am’s label. “The thing with Will and [BEP's Apl.de.Ap], they always DJ,” Redfoo said. “They’re the most musical people in the world.”
Despite plenty of late nights on tour, the Peas haven’t passed on any bad habits to the LMFAO guys. In fact, the younger group has followed the Grammy-winning act’s lead by bringing a staff on tour so they can conduct business and work on the follow-up to their breakout debut, Party Rock.
“[BEP] got a studio bus, and [now] we have two buses, so we’ve been working on our album the whole time,” Redfoo said. “We brought like seven staff members. Some of them have nothing to do with the tour — the graphic artist guy is developing our next line. It’s like an office for us. We can’t just do a show and sit back and chill out. We have to always be working.”

The Black Eyed Peas‘ Will.I.Am has been promising bigger things lately from his four-person collective, and it’s safe to say the eccentric producer has been delivering every time. From their standout Grammy performance, which the BEP frontman predicted would be a spectacle, to their world tour, which is set to include “things flying and the stage transforming,” it doesn’t look like the group will be slowing down anytime soon.
On Wednesday, the record-breaking hip-hop act premiered their latest video, an epic clip for their new singles “Imma Be” and “Rock That Body,” online. The 10-minute video, “Imma Be Rocking That Body,” was directed by Rich Lee and features the Peas on a mission to jumpstart the party in the year 3008.
The visuals open with Will.I.Am showing his bandmates the product inside a steel briefcase that he has next to him. The contents of the case comprise a technology that can capture his vocals and reproduce them singing or rapping at the touch of a button.
“This right here is the future,” he tells Fergie, apl.de.ap and Taboo. “This is what’s gonna take the Peas into 3008.”
Fergie, though, is happy with where the group is in 2010. After scoring their first two #1 hits last year, who can blame her? So she storms off in a huff leaving the fellas in Will’s studio.
What follows next is an “X-Men” meets “The Matrix”-like adventure. Fergie mysteriously wakes up after pulling away from the guys on her motorcycle only to find herself transported into the future. She later reconnects with Will, and the two of them flee in a hover-car from a gigantic robot who, presumably, wants to stop the party. A big no-no for the Peas.
Halfway through the clip, “Imma Be” transitions into the even more upbeat “Rock That Body” and the tables turn. Fergie is kidnapped and the rest of the Peas are now in hot pursuit of their First Lady. The guys ultimately get their girl, blasting away at bystanders along the way who start breakin’ after being struck by the rays.
In the end, however, the evil robot can’t compete with the Peas’ partying. It loses a dance-off and tumbles to the ground. So the groove wins. And Fergie, who was previously resistant to Will’s forward thinking (”You can’t call yourself futuristic and be afraid of the future,” he said earlier in the clip), then awakens only to discover she crashed just blocks away from the studio. With the group surrounding her, a smile crosses her face as she responds to their assistance.
“I got the greatest idea for a video …,” Fergie tells her confused band mates.

Will.I.Am Calls The Black Eyed Peas’ Grammy Wins ‘Gratifying’

The Black Eyed Peas had a heck of a haul during the 52nd annual Grammy Awards, as the collective nabbed wins for their album (The E.N.D.), their record-breaking single (”I Gotta Feeling”) and the video for “Boom Boom Pow.”
“It’s gratifying,” Will.I.Am told MTV News. “Having broken records that you never thought you would break, like 27 weeks at #1 [for 'I Gotta Feeling'], that’s like six months. Selling out crazy stadiums with no record stores, and this being the biggest year in your career? It’s crazy. ‘Cause last album, we sold 12 million records, and going into this record, we were kinda scared about how it would perform, because there’s no stores. But we outperformed our last album, and we’re still in the middle of it.”
The E.N.D. was the Black Eyed Peas’ first album since 2003’s Elephunk. That project featured an array of hits, including “Let’s Get It Started,” and kick-started Fergie’s solo career. After a break, however, they reunited when Will.I.Am was inspired by a new sound for their then-forthcoming project. The producer took in some nightlife during his time on the set of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” and came away with an appreciation for the world of electronica.
“He would always go to those clubs and get influenced by electronic music,” BEP member Taboo told MTV News last year. “It’s a dance album. It’s for people around the world.”
The Peas will celebrate their wins — for Best Pop Album, Best Pop Vocal by a Duo or Group and Best Short-Form Video — before they prep for the launch of their world tour, which begins next week in Atlanta.
Ludacris is scheduled to join Will.I.Am and company for a tour that the BEP front man promised would be eye-opening. “Bigger production, things flying and the stage transforming,” Will promised.

Grammy Night Belongs To Beyonce And Taylor Swift

There were plenty of over-the-top moments during Sunday night’s (January 31) 52nd annual Grammy Awards, but none of them could outshine Beyoncé and Taylor Swift.
Yes, the dynamic duo — who were nominated for a combined 16 Grammy Awards — took home 10 of them, with Beyoncé winning six, including Song of the Year, and Swift snagging four, including the night’s biggest trophy, Album of the Year.
“I hope that you know how much this means to me … that we get to take this back to Nashville!” Swift squealed while accepting the Album of the Year award. “Our families are freaking out in their living rooms! My dad and my little brother are losing their minds in our living room right now!”
Swift’s three other Grammys came in the country category, with Fearless winning Best Country Album and her hit “White Horse” grabbing Best County Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance. Beyoncé’s haul was spread out across many categories. Her ubiquitous “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” won three Grammys, for Song of the Year, Best R&B Song and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. “Halo” won for Best Pop Female Vocal Performance, and her version of Etta James’ “At Last” took home the award for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance.
“This has been such an amazing night for me,” B said while accepting her Best Female Pop award. “I’d like to thank my family, including my husband [Jay-Z, just in case anyone didn't know]. I love you.”
Following close behind Beyoncé and Swift were a pair of artists who won three Grammys, including Jay-Z (Best Rap Solo Performance, Best Rap Song and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration) and the Kings of Leon, who shocked many (but not us) when their “Use Somebody” took home Record of the Year, a win they were definitely in the mood to celebrate.
“We’re a little drunk, but we’re happy drunk,” Kings drummer Nathan Followill laughed while accepting the award, before rattling off a lengthy “thank you” list. “If there’s anyone else I forgot; I’ll buy you shots later.”
Later in the telecast, while accepting the Grammy for Best Rock Album, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong sounded like he was looking to party too, signing off with, “And now, I’m gonna have shots with Kings of Leon!”
Also in the mood to celebrate: the Black Eyed Peas, who won three Grammys (one for Best Short Form Music Video); Eminem, who took home two awards; and Lady Gaga, who won two of her own (though both were during the pre-televised ceremony).
But for all the award-accepting merriment, it was the performances that shined brightest on this Grammy night. Or at least they shined the loudest. Show producers gave out only a handful of awards during the actual telecast, deciding to focus instead on the talents they had assembled inside the Staples Center, and that talent delivered, with one massive spectacle after the next.
Lady Gaga kicked off the show with a theatrical version of “Poker Face” — which featured a steam-powered set dubbed “The Fame Factory,” some flames and a pair of seriously sparkly shoulder pads — then welcomed Elton John to the stage for a dueling-piano take on Gaga’s “Speechless” (and a few bars of the John/ Bernie Taupin classic “Your Song”). And, in keeping with the rather flamboyant nature of both artists, show producers made sure their conjoined piano was topped with severed mannequin arms.
It was a pretty epic opening, but Beyoncé didn’t back down from the challenge. She stormed into Staples with an army of riot-gear-clad escorts, then got down to belting out a fiery version of “If I Were a Boy,” complete with a shredding backing band and a brief foray into Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know.” She wrapped up her performance by channeling her inner Tina Turner, dropping to her knees and singing for the rafters. By the time B had gotten to her feet, so had the audience, who showered her with applause.
Pink got aerial (and soaking wet) during her performance of “Glitter in the Air,” which saw her wrapped in linen, sent soaring above the crowd at Staples, then dipped into a pool of water. The Black Eyed Peas rattled the roof with a booming medley of their hits, which featured a battalion of electric-clad dancers, Fergie donning her Robocop finest and Will.I.Am rocking an inexplicable black molding of his head on his head. Green Day offered a preview of their American Idiot musical, featuring members of the cast. And Lil Wayne, Eminem, Drake and Travis Barker roared versions of Weezy’s “Drop the World” and D’s “Forever,” though, judging by the frequent audio drops, it would seem the network censors got a little too anxious with the “delay” button.
There was also a 3-D tribute to the late Michael Jackson, which featured Celine Dion, Carrie Underwood, Smokey Robinson and Jennifer Hudson performing Jackson’s “Earth Song,” while 3-D images played around them (and featured unintentionally comical shots of stars like Rihanna, Beyoncé and Will.I.Am wearing their 3-D glasses in the audience). It will probably be remembered best for what happened next, as two of Jackson’s children — son Prince and daughter Paris — accepted an honorary lifetime-achievement award in their father’s memory.
“I want to thank the fans, our father loved you so much,” Prince said, his voice wavering slightly. “We will continue to spread his message and help the world.”
“Daddy was going to be here; he was going to perform this year, [because] he couldn’t perform last year,” his daughter Paris added. “Thank you. We love you, Daddy.”
It was an emotional moment in a night largely bereft of them, though the Dave Matthews Band’s stirring performance of “You & Me,” and Wyclef’s from-the-heart speech about his native Haiti — in which he spoke in Creole and thanked the world for their support, before adding, “We will continue” — did manage to tug on the heartstrings. But this night will probably be best remembered for Beyoncé and Swift’s dominance, not to mention the sheer spectacle of the performances, which proved that even in dour times, the music industry knows how to throw a party — a massive, eye-popping, over-the-top one at that.
The 2010 Grammy Awards may be over, but MTV News will have much, much more from the show, including reports on your favorite nominees, party photos, behind-the-scenes video and much more from the big show!

Following on early dance and country Grammy wins by artists like Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift, a collection of some of the biggest names in hip-hop, pop and R&B were honored with statues before the show kicked off. The winners include Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Rihanna, the Black Eyed Peas and Eminem.
Nominated for 10 total awards — the most of any artist this year — Beyoncé took home four early awards. For Best R&B Song, her “Single Ladies” triumphed over Jamie Foxx and T-Pain, Maxwell and Jazmine Sullivan. Beyoncé also beat T-Pain and Foxx for Best Contemporary R&B Album (I Am … Sasha Fierce). In the Best Female R&B Vocal Performance category, the singer’s “Single Ladies” beat out tunes from Melanie Fiona and others. Her “At Last” cover came out on top for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance over songs from Anthony Hamilton and Ann Nesby.
Beyoncé’s husband also took home some pre-show awards. Jay won for Best Rap Solo Performance (”D.O.A. [Death of Auto-Tune]“) and Best Rap Song (”Run This Town). He shared that second award with Kanye West and Rihanna.
Eminem won twice as well: Best Rap Album ( Relapse) and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group (”Crack a Bottle”), along with Dr. Dre and 50 Cent.
The Black Eyed Peas already have a slew of wins, from Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals (”I Gotta Feeling”) to Best Pop Vocal Album (The E.N.D.) to Best Short Form Video (”Boom Boom Pow”).
Earlier in the evening, Gaga nabbed two wins (Best Dance Recording and Best Electronic/Dance Album), as did Taylor Swift (Best Female Country Vocal Performance and Best Country Song category). The “Twilight” soundtrack lost out twice to sounds from “Slumdog Millionaire.”
