Robert Pattinson Poses With A ‘30 Rock’ Star In Today’s Daily TwitPic

by on Mar.02, 2010, under MTV Movies Blog

Twilight” star Robert Pattinson is doing the press rounds right now for his upcoming non-vampire movie “Remember Me,” which hits theaters next week. This has given his adoring public a rare opportunity to see the normally inaccessible superstar out in the world.

What do I mean by “inaccessible”? Well Pattinson isn’t really able to just stroll down the street these days. He’s not one of those celebrities who seeks out attention wherever he can and he stays away from popular outlets like Twitter. Which makes this morning’s Daily TwitPic even more special. RPattz might have a public face on the micro-blogging website, but “30 Rock” star Judah Friedlander does. And when both celebs appeared last night on Jimmy Fallon, Friedlander nabbed the opportunity for a photo op with the sparkly vampire, which he preserved in the twitpic found after the jump.

Remember to check out Brian Warmoth’s Twitter-Wood column every day for an early jump on your Daily TwitPic.

Ben Stiller And Tom Cruise To Make ‘Tropic Thunder’ Spin-Off Movie?

by on Mar.02, 2010, under MTV Movies Blog

In December of 2008, shortly after receiving a Golden Globe nomination for his turn as hirsute studio chief Les Grossman in “Tropic Thunder,” Tom Cruise revealed that he and the film’s writer/director/star Ben Stiller were kicking around ideas to do another project with the Grossman character.

“Ben and I are always talking about what we can do with Les,” Cruise told MTV News at the time. “Do we do some viral video with Les?”

We haven’t heard any movement on this possibility, so when we had a chance to speak with Stiller while he was promoting his upcoming indie, “Greenberg,” we put the question to him. Anything shaking with the Grossman project?

“We’re playing around with ideas for a Les Grossman something,” Stiller said. “Maybe a movie, maybe some Internet stuff. I love that character and Tom, I think, is just insanely funny doing that guy. And I think he’s game for it too.”

Is this just idle talk from Stiller? Or have their ideas for Grossman morphed from a few Internet shorts to an actual theatrical spin-off? We’ll remain cautiously optimistic and simply be happy knowing that Stiller and Cruise are still keeping alive the idea of resurrecting the classically pompous and foul-mouthed Grossman character a year and a half after “Tropic Thunder” opened.

EXCLUSIVE: Christina Ricci, Liam Neeson And Justin Long Bathed In Shadow For This ‘After.Life’ Poster

by on Mar.01, 2010, under MTV Movies Blog

Wouldn’t it be weird if you woke up in a funeral parlor, watching on as the mortician prepares your corpse for burial? What would be stranger still is if that mortician then turned and spoke to you, offering to aid in your transition to the afterlife.

That’s the basic setup for “After.Life,” an upcoming horror/thriller from director Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo, who also co-wrote the script with Paul Vosloo. Christina Ricci stars as the recently deceased, Liam Neeson plays the mortician and Justin Long is the boyfriend who thinks that something fishy is going on. He’s probably right too.

Hit the jump to see the brand new poster, teased in the image above.

Adam Brody, Alia Shawkat, Catherine Keener And Allison Janney Could Join Hugh Laurie-Starring Indie ‘The Oranges’

by on Mar.01, 2010, under MTV Movies Blog

by Perri Nemiroff

The cast of “The Oranges” is growing a whole lot juicier. Just after word got out that “House” star Hugh Laurie could make the dark comedy his much-anticipated first lead role in a film, The Hollywood Reporter announces that a slew of top-notch actors are interested in joining him. Adam Brody, Alia Shawkat, Catherine Keener and Allison Janney are all in negotiations to sign onto TV director Julian Farino’s debut in the features department.

The script by Ian Helfer and Jay Reiss, which you may remember as the piece holding the #2 spot on the 2008 black list, has Laurie starring as man who gets romantic with the daughter of a family friend. That young lady was speculated to be played by either Leighton Meester or Mila Kunis, but according to the THR report, Meester has won out.

The unconventional relationship causes family drama, particularly with Laurie’s character’s son (Brody), who falls for Meester as well. Keener will play Mrs. Laurie and Shawkat their second child who’s considering moving out of the family abode. Janney would play Meester’s mom.

Yes, this sounds like one heck of a dysfunctional family, but at least it’s a well-cast one. “House” fans are aching to see Laurie headline a film. And who better to pair him with than the quintessential mom, Keener? As for the kiddies, it’s difficult to move past Meester playing “Gossip Girl”’s Blair Waldorf, but the fact that she can go from conniving enemy to Serena’s BFF in a matter of seconds shows she’s got some range.

Brody and Shawkat are always eager to please and often do. Brody is coming off roles in “Jennifer’s Body” and “Cop Out” while you may recognize Shawkat from the indie film “Bart Got a Room” or from Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut “Whip It.” Or, of course, the unjustly canceled Fox TV series, “Arrested Development.” If all goes to plan, the group will unite to begin shooting in New York on March 30th.

Do you think these actors are the perfect components for a family dramedy? Are you glad it is Meester over Kunis?

‘Battlestar Galactica’ Actor James Callis Joins ABC’s ‘FlashForward’ For A ‘Major’ But Mysterious Role

by on Mar.01, 2010, under MTV Movies Blog

James CallisWith delays aplenty, ratings declining and the departure of showrunner David Goyer, it’s hard to stay optimistic about ABC’s “FlashForward.” Still, if there’s any news that’s going to lift the spirits of the science fiction show’s fans, it’s this — James Callis is joining the cast.

In an interview with Sci Fi Wire, newly minted co-showrunner Jessika Borsiczky revealed that Callis, who played the morally gray Doctor Gaius Baltar on “Battlestar Galactica,” has a major role to play on “FlashForward” in the final episodes of the first season.

“I don’t actually want to tell you anything about the character, because he’s a really exciting, unusual character,” Borsiczky teased. “So I think it’s going to be fun for the audience. He’s going to be involved with Olivia’s trajectory… some of Olivia’s journey.”

As for how Callis landed a role on the show, Borsiczky said it all has to do with the actor’s portayal of Baltar, the sleazy but simultaneously sympathetic scientist on “Battlestar.”

“When I watched ‘Battlestar,’ every time he wasn’t in a scene I couldn’t wait for him to come back,” she said. “And I really wanted to have an opportunity to work with him. Honestly, since the show was ordered, we’ve been excited to work with him.”

“He’s playing a big role in some of the final episodes this season, and it was for that very reason,” she added.

Borsiczky addressed some of the fears surrounding the recent departure of her husband David Goyer as the showrunner on “FlashForward,” insisting that it was always something that the series’ creative minds were prepared for.

“We always anticipated David would leave to go do movies, so for us it was something we were always bracing ourselves for and preparing for,” she said. “The game plan [of Borsiczky, Lisa Zweling and Tim Lea taking Goyer's place] was already in place when it happened, so it’s obviously a headline, and people get sad, and it’s fairly page-turning, but honestly it’s business as usual, for the most part, over here.”

Tell us what you think about Callis’ “FlashForward” role in the comments and on Twitter!

Matt Damon Leaves Door Open To ‘Bourne’ Franchise Return, Greengrass Prepared To Help With Reboot

by on Mar.01, 2010, under MTV Movies Blog

The overall word coming out over the weekend from the widely attended junket for Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass‘ “Green Zone” seemed to be that the actor and the director had definitively said goodbye to the “Bourne” franchise. But when MTV News spoke with them, both men signaled that their involvement with the series has not completely ended: Damon held out the chance that he could return to “Bourne” territory and Greengrass is committed to assisting with the creation of a rebooted “Bourne” flick with another actor in the title role.

“We see a very clear way that they could go [with the story] that wouldn’t interfere with the series that we have and that might give it a chance to have a life right now and if we come back and did another one, even after that without us,” he said.

The “very clear way” seems to involve rebooting the franchise with a new actor, whose character takes on Bourne’s literal identity — the name given to a uniquely positioned government operative. Handled with such a storytelling technique, the franchise could then easily welcome Damon — and Greengrass — back into the fold in the future.

Of course, it seems that Greengrass hasn’t entirely left the fold at this point. The director has already offered his assistance to Universal in reworking “Bourne.” “I just felt I need to go do different things, which is not unusual in franchises,” he explained. “Studios understand that and Universal was incredibly understanding when I explained it. I said, ‘If there’s anything I can do to help, just give me a call.’”

“They’re still figuring out what they’re doing,” Greengrass continued. “But I’m going to continue to make movies for Universal. I’m going to continue to make movies with Matt hopefully. They’ll undoubtedly continue to make ‘Bourne’ movies. So it’s all good news.”

What do you think of this plan to have the “Bourne” franchise come to resemble the James Bond series? Do you like the idea?

Predicting The Best Supporting Actor Winner At This Sunday’s Academy Awards

by on Mar.01, 2010, under MTV Movies Blog

Now that 2009 and its many delicious film releases are behind us, it’s time to focus on the year’s best. It was a pretty great year for movies from where I’m sitting. There are three standout favorites I can name from 2009 — “Avatar,” “A Serious Man” and “The Hurt Locker” — and they couldn’t be more different from one another. All three are Best Picture nominees however, which means that one will rise above the rest after the votes have been counted.

All this week, MTV.com will be running category previews to hype you up for the Sunday awards ceremony. This morning brought the first, a look at the Best Supporting Actor nominees. As a supplement to these rundowns, we’ll be running predictions here on the Movies Blog. Not that this category’s winner is really in question.

The five candidates are Matt Damon for “Invictus,” Woody Harrelson for “The Messenger,” Christopher Plummer for “The Last Station,” Stanley Tucci for “The Lovely Bones” and Christoph Waltz for “Inglourious Basterds.” All of these guys are fine actors who turned in great performances for their respective roles. But only one can be winner, and the statue will undoubtedly go to Waltz this year.

In Nazi SS Colonel Hans Landa, Waltz does the unthinkable: he brings to life the best villain that director Quentin Tarantino has ever put on screen. The writing is there of course, but it would be nothing without the actor’s stellar performance. He serves up this brilliant, calculating military man, all smiles and handshakes until he circles around to whatever dark truth he’s attempting to shed light on.

The first scene in “Inglourious,” when Landa shows up at a French farm in search of hidden Jews, is a Tarantino moment that rivals the likes of the ‘Royale with cheese’ chat in “Pulp Fiction” and the ear-cutting in “Reservoir Dogs.” Waltz’s transformation from amiable fact-checker to hard-edged executioner is both instantaneous and thoroughly believable. All due respect to the other nominees, but Waltz won’t be going home empty-handed on Sunday night.

Fox Hopes For Franchise With Dystopian Fantasy Series ‘Incarceron’

by on Mar.01, 2010, under MTV Movies Blog

Hollywood continues its search for the next “Harry Potter.” “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” hasn’t yet proven itself as a worthy successor. So perhaps it will be “Incarceron,” Catherine Fisher’s young adult series which recently debuted in the U.S. and immediately became a best seller? Fox 2000 certainly hopes so after beating out at least two other studios for the rights to adapt the books into a family film franchise.

“Incarceron” tells the story of 17-year-old Finn, a boy born into an expansive nightmarish prison society in some kind of dystopian future in which computers control the appearance of the real world to look like it’s the 17th century. Determined to escape into that outer world (called Sapphique), Finn partners with Claudia, the daughter of Incarceron’s Warden, and the two find a mysterious crystal key that could help them out.

I haven’t read the book, so all that sounds pretty crazy, and intriguing. Whether a film version may be like a kids’ “Matrix” or another difficult sell like “City of Ember” remains to be seen, however. From what I can tell, Fisher has created quite an imaginative universe with plenty of entertaining plots and characters, rather than merely a curious, high-concept fantasy premise. That has me more hopeful that “Incarceron” might result in something more than another “Harry Potter” wannabe.

So far there are two published installments. The first, “Incarceron,” was released in the UK three years ago and finally in the States back in January. Its follow-up, “Sapphique” will debut in the U.S. in early 2011 (it’s been out in the UK since 2008).

Have you read “Incarceron”? Do you think it could be the next big fantasy film franchise?
