Oscars Preview: Best Supporting Actress

We take a look at Anna Kendrick, Mo’Nique, Maggie Gyllenhaal and other nominees before Sunday’s show.

Your grandparents used to be fond of saying that behind every great man stands a great woman. Such a phrase might seem sexist these days, but when it comes to one pivotal Academy Awards category, something still holds true: Behind some of the greatest performances of the year stands an accomplished woman.

It’s doubtful that Jeff Bridges would be racking up all those awards-season trophies if his “Crazy Heart” performance hadn’t been paired with Maggie Gyllenhaal’s tender, heartbreaking work. George Clooney would have been nothing but eye candy if the pivotal supporting roles in “Up in the Air” had been given to less talented actresses than Anna Kendrick and Vera Farmiga. With this in mind — and the big ceremony on Sunday — here’s our breakdown of the Best Supporting Actress category, and which one of these ladies is likely to go home in possession of a new, great man.

Penélope Cruz, “Nine”
When you’re hot, you’re hot — and in the eyes of movie fans these days, Penélope Cruz is hot in every conceivable way. Now, she’s following up last year’s Best Supporting Actress Oscar (for “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”) with another nomination. Can she repeat? Working against her is the fact that voters will think she already had her moment at the podium, and “Nine” was one of the most notable disappointments of late 2009. Working in her favor, however, is the fact that she’s Penélope Cruz.

Vera Farmiga, “Up in the Air”
Jason Reitman’s dramedy about corporate downsizing is the type of film you walk out of wanting to give awards to everyone involved. Unfortunately, Academy voters will need to choose in this category, as veteran actress Farmiga squares off against her co-star Anna Kendrick. Both have great, showy roles in one of the year’s best films. But will they cancel each other out? That remains to be seen, but this much is obvious: It ain’t gonna help.

Maggie Gyllenhaal, “Crazy Heart”
There’s something kind of icky about watching younger-looking-than-her-32-years Maggie Gyllenhaal share love scenes with 60-year-old Jeff Bridges. But there’s something quite exhilarating about every other aspect of her “Crazy Heart” performance. Just when you think she’s a sad, single mother, she proves herself quite independent. When you think Bridges’ Bad Blake might be taking advantage of her, it turns out she’s the one steering their relationship. Gyellenhaal’s young reporter is flawed, honest — and a good woman deep in her bones. Her decision at the end of the film is a heartbreaker, as is that of any Academy voter who might think to mark someone else’s name.

Anna Kendrick, “Up in the Air”
Until recently, she was just another young actress in Hollywood with a short résumé, a head shot and a dream. Now, Anna Kendrick has delivered the double shot of back-to-back “Twilight” films and a showcase role in “Air” alongside George Clooney. Director Jason Reitman gave Kendrick the role because he saw a talent in her. Watch the film, and we dare you to not leave the theater similarly awestruck. If Anna does win, that noise you hear will be millions of Twilighters rejoicing. Even if she doesn’t, at age 24, Anna has a very bright future ahead of her.

Mo’Nique, “Precious”
Even a deep-water diver would have a hard time reciting all the awful movies Mo’Nique has made in a single breath: “Two Can Play That Game,” “Half Past Dead,” “Soul Plane,” “Hair Show,” “Domino,” “Welcome Home, Roscoe Jenkins” and, of course, “Phat Girlz” (don’t forget that Z!). Now, in the most unlikely of Oscar Cinderella stories, the veteran comedian has not only given a good performance, she’s given a jaw-droppingly amazing, transformative one, rocketing her to the top of surefire Oscar-winner lists. If you’re smart, you’ll put a check next to Mo’Nique’s name on your office-pool ballot.

‘Remember Me’ Stars Rave About Robert Pattinson At NYC Premiere

‘He’s fascinating to watch because he’s so naturally subtle and interesting,’ Emilie de Ravin tells MTV News.

NEW YORK — The mountains of snow piled up on the sidewalks could not keep Robert Pattinson’s fans at bay Monday evening (March 1) at the red-carpet premiere for his romantic drama, “Remember Me.” The screaming masses lined up early and were gifted with a few moments of rabid OME-dom as RPattz ran down the line greeting all those who waited to catch a glimpse of him.

Inside the makeshift press tent at the Paris Theatre in midtown, the energy was no less wild, the screams of folks waiting to talk with Pattinson no less ear-piercing. But the 23-year-old superstar, tired yet amused as ever by the pandemonium, seemed to take it all in stride. While MTV News was chatting with his co-star Emilie de Ravin, Pattinson leaned over and shouted, “Emilie! Emilie! What’s the most fascinating thing about me? Just say it!”

It was that kind of evening, as all involved in “Remember Me” contended with the noisy reality of what it means to have a “Twilight” vampire in your cast. De Ravin and co-stars Pierce Brosnan and Chris Cooper spoke about how this role — in which RPattz plays a rebellious young man who falls for a beautiful girl (De Ravin) — represents a profound evolution for Pattinson as an actor.

“It means growth,” Cooper said of his co-star’s part. “Robert had a big hand as an executive producer in this film. That tells me he’s going to branch out into fields other than acting. He’s got a lot to deal with already, but he’s been able to handle it beautifully.”

De Ravin, who earlier had told MTV News about her instant connection with Pattinson, continued to rave about his skills in front of the camera. “He’s amazing,” she said. “He’s fascinating to watch because he’s so naturally subtle and interesting.”

While the cries from onlookers increased as Pattinson went to greet his fans, Brosnan could only stand back and watch with pride. “This is his night,” he said. “I think this particular piece of drama for him is very significant as a young actor who’s come on the stage in a blinding glare of light and fame. He’s an executive producer on this film, so he’s committed himself to finding good work.”

Robert Pattinson Says He’s Seen ‘Eclipse’ Trailer

The ‘Twilight’ star stops by ‘Today’ to chat about ‘Remember Me,’ ageless vampires and more.

Robert Pattinson’s fans will see the first trailer for “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” when they go to check out his newest flick, “Remember Me,” opening March 12. But the “Twilight” star has already been treated to the film’s forthcoming trailer.

“I haven’t seen [the movie] yet. I just saw the trailer yesterday,” Pattinson told Matt Lauer when he stopped by the “Today” show on Monday (March 1).

“I don’t have anything particularly against vampires,” he responded the question of whether he’d be done with bloodsuckers after filming “Breaking Dawn,” which could be split into two movies. “I really honestly don’t mind if it’s two [movies]. They’re great fun to work on and people really like them, so I could do them for a while longer. I just don’t know if I’m going to look 17 for very much longer.”

Right now, however, Pattinson is focused on making sure he can properly promote “Remember Me.” “I’m just treading water,” he joked of trying to describe his “Rebel Without a Cause”-style character. “When I first read the script, there seemed to be something about it, it didn’t really feel like a film. There seemed like there was a reason to do it. There was something special about it, and I thought every part of it helped it become what it is.”

Pattinson talked about his headline-grabbing interview and racy photo shoot for a recent issue of Details. “If I didn’t have to do interviews, then I wouldn’t do interviews,” he said. “Nothing against anyone. I mean no one’s particularly interesting. If you just do pat answers to things, people get sick of you for that. When you try and think of something to say, then people get sick of you for that.”

Oscars Preview: Best Supporting Actor

by on Mar.01, 2010, under MTV Movies Headlines

Could ‘Inglourious Basterds’ star Christoph Waltz win an Academy Award this year? That’s a bingo!
By Larry Carroll

With less than a week to go, the stage is set for the Oscars — and this year’s show offers us a few good men competing for Best Supporting Actor. From a veteran star who has never gotten his due to another finally breaking through in the U.S., from a hunk overcoming his leading-man looks to a former leading man earning his first nomination in his ninth decade of life, the race is shaping up to be a special one.

Matt Damon, “Invictus”
Beloved by fans, co-workers and critics alike, the nicest guy in Hollywood has somehow gone more than a decade since Oscar last paid him any attention for acting in and writing “Good Will Hunting.” Now he’s back in Clint Eastwood’s semi-biopic about Nelson Mandela as Francois Pienaar, a rugby player who helps him unite a post-Apartheid South Africa. Damon bulked up for the role and delivered his lines with an accent that rendered him almost unrecognizable. How do you like them apples?

Woody Harrelson, “The Messenger”
The guy has portrayed dim-witted bartender Woody Boyd on “Cheers,” ass-kicking maniac Mickey Knox in “Natural Born Killers” and a one-handed bowler in “Kingpin” — how is it that he hasn’t won more awards by now? Shifting gears dramatically once again, Harrelson is a soldier tasked with the job of breaking bad news to the next of kin — and mentoring Ben Foster as the younger soldier seeks to do more. Coupled with his standout work in the genre flick “Zombieland,” even if Harrelson doesn’t win he has reminded us once again that few can match his versatility.

Christopher Plummer, “The Last Station”
The man has made nearly 200 film and television appearances, in everything from “The Sound of Music” to “The Man Who Would Be King” to “Twelve Monkeys” and, most significantly, “Must Love Dogs.” Yet it wasn’t until his 56th year in showbiz that the guy finally got a break, earning Oscar’s attention with a powerful portrayal of late-in-life Leo Tolstoy. Does the 80-year-old actor have what it takes to hold off all those young whippersnappers on Oscar night? If not, let’s just hope he doesn’t have to wait until the year 2066 for his next nomination.

Stanley Tucci, “The Lovely Bones”
Another veteran actor who has never truly gotten his due, Tucci has been memorable in everything from “Road to Perdition” to “The Devil Wears Prada” to “Big Night” (which he also directed). Now, he finds himself in the unenviable situation of giving an amazing performance in one of the most disappointing films of the year. Cast as a despicable child murderer, Tucci is unrecognizable in Peter Jackson’s “Bones,” giving a performance that should have made him this generation’s Hannibal Lecter. The odd thing is that out of the five nominees, he is the most dependable career “supporting actor” — but probably the least likely to win on Oscar night.

Christoph Waltz, “Inglourious Basterds”
Unquestionably the favorite to take home the naked gold guy on Oscar night, Waltz is a 53-year-old Austrian acting veteran who was convinced he’d never break through in the States — and then he met Quentin Tarantino. After weeks of being an awards-season juggernaut, his brutally endearing performance as “Jew Hunter” Hans Landa has clearly won over voters. Now all we can do is hope that when his name gets called, he stands up and exclaims his trademark line: “That’s a bingo!”

Daniel Radcliffe Is ‘Sad’ As He Begins Saying Goodbye To Harry Potter

‘It’s something you have to accept,’ he says after 10 years of playing the boy wizard.

These days, everybody is looking forward to seeing the back-to-back films that will finish off Hollywood’s beloved boy-wizard franchise with “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.” Everybody, that is, except the series star.

“It will be very sad when it comes to a finishing,” Daniel Radcliffe said of his rapidly diminishing days working on the final “Potter” film. “But it’s something you have to accept.”

All the fans can take solace in knowing they won’t have to say goodbye to Harry and his friends for quite some time. The first “Deathly Hallows” film won’t hit movie screens until this November, the second part arrives in July of 2011, and if that isn’t enough, you can always get your fix at the soon-to-open theme park. Radcliffe, who began the series at age 11 and is now 20 years old, has already begun the goodbyes.

“Yeah, we’ve had a few people finish off their stories in the film, and they’ve been going home,” Radcliffe said of actors like Helena Bonham Carter, who told us recently that she wrapped a few months ago. “It is odd [seeing them leave].

“I did have a moment the other day, in the makeup room that I have been in for 10 years now,” he revealed. “I did walk in and go, ‘Wow, this is [hitting me]. One day — in about four or five months from now — I’m gonna walk in here for the last time.’ Especially since, after we’re done shooting, they’re redoing the entire studio, tearing down and starting again.”

So get ready to shed a few tears, Potter fans, as Harry’s world will begin to come down sooner than you might expect. But Radcliffe was also quick to point out that the series has done a lot of wonderful things, including bringing an increased film presence to the actor’s native land.

“It’s going to be amazing,” he said of the renovation of the stages that have housed “Potter” for a decade. “A big investment is going into Leavesden [Studios], and England will finally have a third film studio. They’ve always had Shepperton and Pinewood, but to have Leavesden? That will do wonders for the film industry in England, which is always a struggle to keep going.”

With Warner Bros. recently announcing plans to purchase the studios and establish a permanent U.K. base, Radcliffe told us that it’s just another reason the “Harry Potter” films have been such a joy to work on. “What’s been amazing about Potter is that Potter has been the major film in England for the last 10 years,” explained the star, who also recently used his star power for good while filming a public-service announcement in support of the Trevor Project. “[Our films] have given a lot of people jobs, myself included.”

And as for his upcoming second decade in Hollywood, Radcliffe said he won’t spend it looking backward. “It’s also very exciting [to be finishing the series],” he said. “And I’ll hopefully have something to go onto shortly afterwards.”

Why Robert Pattinson Plays A ‘Normal Guy’ In ‘Remember Me’

by on Mar.01, 2010, under MTV Movies Headlines

‘I had never really done that,’ actor explained.
By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Photo: MTV News

Over the course of Robert Pattinson’s six-year-long acting career, the two projects the 23-year-old Brit has become best known for have been “The Twilight Saga” and “Harry Potter.” But the March 12 release of his newest film, “Remember Me,” looms ever closer, and it could be Pattinson’s big chance to break out of the supernatural-character mold.

“Remember Me” will be the first non-vampire film Pattinson has participated in since he first started filming “Twilight” in 2007, and his character Tyler is a big step away from Edward Cullen. Tyler is a college student who is traumatized by his brother’s suicide and is only brought back to reality after he becomes involved with Emilie de Ravin’s character, Ally Craig.

“I looked at ‘Remember Me’ after the first ‘Twilight’ film, in the summer [of 2007], and met [director] Allen [Coulter] and [producer] Nick [Osborne] and just thought I really liked it and didn’t know if anything was going to come of it,” Pattinson reminisced. “And then, in the period between ‘New Moon’ and ‘Eclipse,’ I think there was two months or something, [I filmed 'Remember Me'].”

The fact that the movie could be shot in such a short period of time and also involved very little prep work added to Pattinson’s interest in the project. To him, “Remember Me” was a perfect fit, and also a perfect way to step into a character he had never played before.

“I never really played a normal guy before, and it was just that,” Pattinson explained. “It was just a really solid story, and I had never really done that.”

‘Shutter Island’ Scares Up Another Box-Office Win

by on Feb.28, 2010, under MTV Movies Headlines

New releases ‘Cop Out’ and ‘The Crazies’ settle for second and third, respectively; ‘Avatar’ continues record-breaking streak.

#1 “Shutter Island” ($22.2 million)
#2 “Cop Out” ($18.6 million)
#3 “The Crazies” ($16.5 million)
#4 “Avatar” ($14 million)
#5 “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” ($9.8 million)

For the second weekend in a row, “Shutter Island” topped the box office with a respectable $22.2 million intake. Director Martin Scorsese and actor Leonardo DiCaprio’s latest thrilling collaboration has already earned $75 million domestically in two weeks, now just a stone’s throw away from making back its production budget of $80 million.

Failing to capture the first-place slot, major newcomers “Cop Out” and “The Crazies” turned their sights on second place instead. Both films entered Saturday morning with a mere $5,000 difference, but it was director Kevin Smith’s buddy-cop comedy that ultimately emerged as the silver medalist with $18.6 million, marking the single greatest opening weekend ever for Smith. His previous best was an $11 million weekend debut for “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.”

While “Cop Out” finished the weekend in better standing, Overture Films enjoyed a greater return on its investment with “The Crazies,” which earned $16.5 million by Sunday’s conclusion and only cost $20 million to produce. “Cop Out,” in contrast, was filmed on a $30 million budget.

Director James Cameron’s “Avatar” continued its record-breaking warpath, becoming the first film in history to break past $700 million at the domestic box office. The $706.9 million tally puts “Avatar” more than $100 million past “Titanic,” currently sitting at an all-time second-place record of $600.8 million.

Fox’s “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” brought in $9.8 million, just barely out-grossing the $9.5 million earned by “Valentine’s Day.” Director Garry Marshall’s romantic comedy took a tough tumble from last weekend’s second-place result to this weekend’s sixth-place finish.

The best per-screen average of the weekend belonged to embattled filmmaker Roman Polanski’s “The Ghost Writer” with $20,233 theater-for-theater.

Upcoming Releases

“Avatar” meets its first major 3-D competition in the form of Disney and Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” starring Johnny Depp and Anne Hathaway. The crime genre takes a dramatic turn from the comedy of “Cop Out” with “Brooklyn’s Finest.”

‘Remember Me’ Stars Robert Pattinson, Emilie De Ravin On Being Self-Critical

by on Feb.28, 2010, under MTV Movies Headlines

‘You can never be a character, that’s the one thing I’m sort of starting to realize,’ RPattz said of acting.

“Remember Me,” the drama starring Robert Pattinson and Emilie de Ravin due out March 12, is a film focused more on character than plot. And when the actors sat down with MTV News, they discussed how difficult it was to not be too critical of themselves in a film that focuses so heavily on acting.

“I’m always quite self-deprecating, I suppose,” de Ravin said, stealing the term so often used to describe Pattinson. “I’m trying to get out of that and trying to look at something from a removed point of view.”

She said it’s not just hard not to be critical of her own acting but also of the other actors she works with.

“It’s even hard watching people, you know, in a role,” she said. “Even if they’re fantastic, you know that person so well that it’s hard to sort of separate it.”

Pattinson faced a different challenge, one he has been working on overcoming since the first “Twilight” film. Back then, he had delved so deeply into the character of Edward, it worried some of the cast and crew, and he was told not to take the character so seriously. Two years later, he said the lesson is starting to sink in.

“You can never be a character, that’s the one thing I’m sort of starting to realize,” he said. “I always thought that, you know, you look at ‘Raging Bull’ and stuff and think, ‘Wow, De Niro, he’s become someone else.’ And I was completely convinced that there is some way that you can actually become someone else for three months.”

He added, “I’m gradually starting to realize it’s more about performance rather than actually some kind of physical [transformation], and it’s taken me quite a long time to realize that.”

Ben Stiller Wants ‘Zoolander 2′ To Include Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell

by on Feb.28, 2010, under MTV Movies Headlines

How will male models Derek and Hansel return to the runway, 10 years later?
By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Ben Stiller

Photo: MTV News

Since 2001, comedy lovers have eagerly anticipated the further adventures of fashion icon Derek Zoolander, the dimwitted but goodhearted protagonist at the center of Ben Stiller’s “Zoolander.” Now, a decade later, the really, really, really good-looking model is set to stroll down the theatrical catwalk once more, as Stiller has confirmed to MTV News recent reports suggesting that a “Zoolander” sequel is in the works.

“Yes, it is true,” Stiller said in an exclusive interview with MTV. “We’re in the process of getting a script written, so it’s in the early stages. But yeah, it’s going to happen.”

According to Stiller, “Zoolander 2″ will focus on how the fashion industry has changed in the 10 years since moviegoers last saw Derek.

“In the fashion world, if you go away for a year, it’s changed — it just happens so quickly,” he said. “I think the idea in the beginning of the movie is that it’s 10 years later, and Derek and Hansel [Owen Wilson's character] are literally forgotten. Nobody remembers who they are, so they have to reinvent themselves.”

In addition to Wilson’s character, Stiller said he’s hoping for the return of Mugatu, the original film’s villain played by Will Ferrell. “If Will says yes, he definitely has to be part of it,” said the comedian. “To me, Mugatu is one of the classic screen villains of all time.”

While “Zoolander 2″ will explain what Derek and Hansel have been up to over the years, many of the film’s fans have wondered why it’s taken so long for a sequel to emerge. Stiller said that he’s tried for years to figure out how to proceed with another installment, noting that the death of “Zoolander” co-creator Drake Sather in 2004 was a difficult obstacle to overcome. “For a long time, that was the hardest thing for me to figure out how to move forward through,” he said. “Now, I think we have.”

The “Zoolander 2″ breakthrough owes thanks not just to Stiller and “Tropic Thunder” writer Justin Theroux, who is possibly directing the developing sequel, but also to other collaborators including original “Zoolander” writer John Hamburg and “Get Him to the Greek” director Nick Stoller.

“We’re going to take the best of what we have,” Stiller said of the current “Zoolander” game plan. “We have a new story idea that we feel excited about, and we’re going to try to go forward.”

Robert Pattinson On ‘Bel Ami’ Sex Scenes

by on Feb.28, 2010, under MTV Movies Headlines

‘In Paris, everybody was just going nuts. It was like the 1980s,’ ‘Twilight’ star says of era depicted in film.
By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

While the steamy sex scenes in “Remember Me” (March 12) might seem like a big shock to Robert Pattinson fans used to the chaste kisses seen in the “Twilight Saga,” the 23-year-old Brit said that they are nothing compared to the sex scenes he filmed for the drama “Bel Ami,” due out in 2011.

“There’s a lot of sex in ['Bel Ami'],” Pattinson warned.

Some of the previous rumors surrounding the film’s sex scenes are dubious, but recent reports that say Pattinson will be filming an orgy sequence for the movie all tie back to the fact that there is going to be a lot of explicit sex in “Bel Ami.”

“It’s a totally amoral character,” Pattinson said of the role in an interview with Variety, adding that he’s playing a different kind of character than his fans are used to seeing.

In “Bel Ami,” Pattinson plays journalist George Duroy in an adaptation of the 1885 Guy de Maupassant short story. Duroy climbs the ranks of Parisian society by seducing influential women, particularly Uma Thurman’s Madeleine Forestier and Christina Ricci’s Clotilde de Marelle.

“[The film] is like the complete antithesis of what you normally think period dramas are about,” Pattinson said, explaining that the era, Paris in the 1890s, is what dictates the different views on sex. “In Paris, everybody was just going nuts. It was like the 1980s. Sex was a kind of a weapon and a tool, and it’s odd.”

Pattinson added, “It’s incredibly different. The [sex scenes] in ‘Remember Me’ are pretty tender, and in ‘Bel Ami’ there’s something very mercenary about it in a lot of ways.”
